FAQs
What will I get out of therapy?
- New insight and understanding around why your experiences have impacted you in the ways they have
- Tools to build and strengthen your skills for managing stress, anxiety, and challenging situations
- Relief from the physical, mental, and emotional distress you’re experiencing
- Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
- Strengthened ability to connect with others and create and maintain healthy relationships
I often work with a Cognitive Behavioral model which suggests that all individuals feel and act according to the specific thoughts and belief systems they have developed. Very often our belief systems are formed in childhood and when we get older those beliefs no longer align with who we are as adults. In our work together, we will explore your beliefs and determine if they are still working on your behalf. If not, I will assist you in developing new belief systems that are more in line with who you are now and what you truly believe.
What is it like working together?
When we meet, I think you’ll find me easy to talk to, compassionate, and knowledgeable about the issues you are experiencing. My clients have told me that I have challenged them, inspired them, supported them, and assisted them in achieving what they most want in life. My goal is to provide a supportive, caring space for you to work through whatever it is that you’re struggling with.
I believe in self-responsibility and encourage my clients to be in charge of both their goals and their growth. My mission is to help you to identify what is hindering your happiness and personal growth, and then work with you to find strategies that help you move toward your goals with confidence.
One of the first things we’ll do is determine your goals for therapy. Once we are both clear about what you want us to be focusing on, we will create a plan that will move us toward these goals effectively and efficiently. As obstacles appear – and they will – I will help you use your newly developed skills to work through those challenges.
How often will we meet?
Like anything, the more attention you give to something, especially initially, the sooner you will see the change you’re looking for. Because of this, we will usually meet weekly for the first couple of weeks, then taper off to every other week as your symptoms resolve and your situations improve. I do recognize that often schedules and budgets don’t allow for weekly meetings, so we will work together to create a plan that meets your unique needs.
Counseling does not have to go on for many months or years to bring about solutions or change. Often clients find that their lives feel more hopeful and manageable after just a few sessions. I will help you actively learn new skills, gain new insights, and experience new ways of relating. I’ll also teach you how to sustain those changes.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
- No issue is too big or too small for therapy. Often taking the time to talk with someone while an issue is still small is what keeps it from getting larger and unmanageable.
- When the symptoms you are experiencing such as insomnia, avoiding social situations, relationship trouble, or performing worse at work or school, start affecting your ability to function, that’s a good indicator that you’d benefit from talking with a professional.
- Maybe you’ve tried talking it through with friends or family but things aren’t improving, even with their support. This could mean speaking with a professional trained in issues like yours could be of great help.
- Or perhaps you’re in the middle of some big life challenges or know they’re coming up – such as a break-up, family trouble, illness, career change, or a significant loss. Talking these things through with a therapist can make a huge difference in navigating these struggles successfully.
